I noticed that my new 4 WD 790 is leaking oil (or hydraulic fluid). On closer inspection I found that it's weeping out of a round threaded hole (about 5/16" dia) on the front of the rear axle casting about two inches below where the brake rod enters the casting. There is the same hole on both the right and left sides of the axle casting. My dealer said he wasn't sure what the holes are for so he phoned JD's service tech line. They told him that he should just plug them so he did. I'm a little nervous because nobody seems to know why the holes are there and they are possibly just taking the easy way out. Does anyone see holes as I've described on the axle casting of their 790? Are they open or plugged? Do they have a vented plug?

Hi Randy, I found the same holes in my 790 4 wd they apear to be a vent hole for the brakes, I checked the tech manual and it doesn't show or talk about them. I did notice in the parts manual page 50-26 that there is a oil seal on both sides part #CH19718 . If this seal went bad it would leak oil into the brake shoes and drum which could cause your brakes to slip and damage the shoes and score the drum.It would seem to me that these holes should be vented. My right hole on mine appears to have had something like grease comming from it at 1 time but does not seem to be leaking any oil . I hope this helps you .

Randy, I also have a JD 790, 4wd. I bought it new from a dealer. It does not have anything in these holes. I don't have any indication of anything leaking out. I only have about 20 hours on the tractor. Keep us posted on what you find out. John. ....

Randy, I finally remembered to look at my 790 last night. I found the holes you mentioned. Each of mine has a light coat of oily dirt around the hole indicating some presence of oil, but no actual leakage. It appears to be a vent hole as someone else mentioned. If there is leakage I'd suspect a seal within the axle housing. Hope this helps, Rob ....
